Moratorium Press Event: April 2, 2002

Introduction of legislation calling for a study of the death penalty announced
and delivery of cards and petitions - over 13,000 signatures collected!

With just a few days left in the Georgia General Assembly, we held a press conference to announce the introduction of death penalty legislation. Rep. Nan Orrock sponsored the resolution and spoke about the need for "Georgia policymakers to put this issue on the front burner."

Supporters held boxes of postcards that had been collected at the capitol and petitions that had been collected over the past two years calling for a moratorium. Rev. Fred Taylor (SCLC), Rev. Brian McAdams of Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, Steve Pruitt -- survivor of the Oklahoma City Bombing, Mary Ruth Weir of New Hope House highlighted the need for a moratorium in the state.

Laura Moye of Amnesty International kicks off the event and introduces all of the speakers.

Rep. Orrock announces her intention of filing a resolution later that day

Mary Ruth Weir of New Hope House describes her experience tabling at the capitol steps almost every day of the session and asking people to sign postcards in support of a moratorium.

Following the event, we delivered 1,500 postcards to legislators and more than 600 pages of petitions with over 12,000 signatures to the governor's office.
